Optometry is a healthcare profession which is autonomous, educated and regulated (licensed/registered). Optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection and management of disease of the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.

Soft Contact Lenses

Opticians are health professionals who are trained to supply, prepare, and dispense optical appliances through interpretation of written prescriptions. Opticians fit and finish eyeglass lenses and frames and also dispense low vision devices, contact lenses, and artificial eyes.

Optometrists are the major providers of primary vision care as independent, primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat, and manage refractive error and binocular vision anomalies and other disorders of the eye and the visual system. They prescribe ophthalmic lenses and contacts to achieve functional vision. Optometrists also do testing to determine the patient’s ability to focus and coordinate the eye, judge depth perception, and see colors accurately. The scope of optometry requires a knowledge of the therapeutic and rehabilitative methods used to care for the problems of vision from infancy through old age.

Sport Vision Low Vision

Sports vision In the last twenty years Sports Vision has been acknowledged through clinical practise and the scientific forum as a speciality of the Sports Medicine. Using the expertise from the Optometry and Ophthalmology sciences, it offers its services not only in the diagnosis and correction of the ocular refractive errors (eg myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism) of the athletes but also for the prevention of eye injuries and ocular hazards using custom-made protective eyewear for sports.

Most important is that Sports Vision scientists can improve the eye-hand co-ordination skills as well as the eye tracking ability of the athlete/coach and the trainee by using specialised equipment. This will result in athletes gathering and processing useful information and respond quickly and efficiently in the context of a sport event. The speed with which this action is taken may distinguish winners from losers among athletes!
